SUPPORT OF GRADUATE RESEARCH IN CHEMISTRY IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES, 1927-1928 COMPILED PORRESEARCA INFORMATION SERYICE, NATIONAL RESEARCHCOUNCIL, BY CLARENCE J. WESTAND CALLIEHULL

he following information regarding the support of graduate research in chemistry in American universities has been compiled as an answer to numerous requests received by t h e Research Information Service of t h e National Research Council f o r data of this kind. The t w o tables were f r o m answers received t o the questionnaire given below and really require no discussion. The most interesting f a c t brought out in -this study is that nearly 45 per cent of all t h e graduate s t u d e n t s in chemistry receive no financial assistance f r o m the universities at which they a r e studying o r f r o m other organizations which support fellowships or scholarships. QUESTIONNAIRE I. Total number of graduate students in chemistry 11. Number of graduate students in chemistry receiving a stipend f~orn'tbe University and giving in return a part of their time in service 1. Range of stipend, $ 2. Number of hours per week in service

to $

111. Number of graduate students in chemistry receiving a stipend from the University without any return in service 1.

Range of stipend, $
