SURFONIC® Low Foaming Surfactants score well in C. S. M. A. Mechanical Dishwashing Tests SURFONIC® LF-5, LF-6 and LF-7 are ethyl ene oxide adducts that have been modified by terminating the polyoxyethylene chain with a group of hydrophobic character to reduce foam ing. A s part of our quality testing, the C.S.M.A. "Spotting and Filming Test in Home Dishwashing Machines" has been carried out to evaluate the relative detergency performance of these low foaming surfactants in special built detergent for mulations as compared with four popular com mercial formulations. The C.S.M.A. tests were performed in a home dishwasher using built or commercial dishwasher formulation ( 4 0 g . ) , oleomargarine and dry milk soil ( 4 0 g . ) , and hard water ( 3 0 0 ppm. hardness)· Results are summarized in the following table: 68

Average detergency ratings differing by ± 0 . 2 or greater are considered significant. Rotor speeds are also important in evaluating low foaming since they are governed by foam heights. The

higher the rotor speed — the lower the foaming. From these results, formulated LF-7, LF-6 and Commercial Formula No. 1 are rated superior low foaming detergents. Formulated LF-5 and Commercial Formula No. 2 exhibit moderate foam and fair detergency, and Commercial For mulas No. 3 and No. 4 are relatively high foamers with lower detergency. The low foam and good surface properties of the SURFONIC L F series makes them useful in metal cleaning, textiles, paper, rinse aids, low foaming heavy-duty and all-purpose detergents.
