Nanoparticles prepared in a similar manner and having the same electrochemical signature have been shown, by high resolution mass spectrometry analysis,1,2 to have the formula Au25(PhCH2CH2S)18. This was further confirmed by single crystal structure determination.3 The native Au25 nanoparticle has a 1charge, and its counterion (from the synthesis) is tetraoctylammonium.
