concerning the desirability of establishing a standard nomencla ture system for filter papers (Sept. 1961, page 117 A ) . Comments in this column were based in large p a r t on answers to a questionnaire sent to major producers of filter papers. I n addition to asking for com ments on the desirability and feasi bility of establishing such a system, we asked who might best devise a system if such were deemed desir able suggesting t h e N a t i o n a l B u reau of Standards, A S T M , and ACS as possibilities. I n none of the responses was there a n y indication t h a t filter p a per manufacturers were aware of the work t h a t had been done in this area. W e must admit t h a t we did not recall any. After this column appeared, we received a letter from the American Society for Testing and Materials pointing out t h a t A S T M h a d issued such a specification. This is en titled " S t a n d a r d Specifications for Filter P a p e r for Use in Chemical Analysis D1100-52." T h i s stand ard was adopted in 1952 after h a v ing been a t e n t a t i v e s t a n d a r d for two years prior thereto. A related A S T M s t a n d a r d is called " S t a n d a r d Methods of T e s t ing Analytical Filter P a p e r s D 9 8 1 56." This was adopted as a stand ard in 1956 after having been a tentative s t a n d a r d from 1948. In 1951 the tentative was revised. A S T M states t h a t the s t a n d a r d s were developed a t a request m a d e in 1947 by several groups including the ACS. T h e s t a n d a r d s were de veloped with the aid of a group of producers and consumers of filter paper by A S T M Committee D - 6 on P a p e r and P a p e r Products. A S T M advises t h a t there have
