NEW PRODUCTS FOR ANALYSTS Equipment Apparatus, Instruments, Reagents, Materials Silicon Oxyhydride

Linde Air Products Co., a Division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corp., has developed a new silicon chemical, silicon oxyhydride, especially useful as a filler and blowing agent for rubber. When the powder is suspended in solutions containing soluble salts of silver, platinum, and other metals, the rapid discoloration of the white powder indicates the deposition of reduced metal. Such material may prove to be effective for specific catalytic purposes. The compound is also a reducing agent which may be useful for chemical synthesis where it is advantageous to employ a solid reagent capable of control by temperature or alkalinity. On heating to 900° C. in the absence of oxygen, it forms silicon sesquioxide which is similar to silicon monoxide and may be used for film coating of mirrors and lenses to increase surface hardness and reduce reflectivity. 1 Gravity Separator

Sutton, Steele & Steele, Inc., has produced a new model of specific gravity separator, Whippet V-80 separator. The new design features are a deltashaped deck and body and a counterbalanced eccentric mechanism which increase culling capacity on lightweight products. The separator has a self-contained air intake and distribution system, and centralized fingertip controls for convenience in making operating adjustments. The machine weighs 100 pounds and measures 22 by 25.25 inches. I t does not require lagging to the floor. 2 Portable Pyrometer-Millivoltmeter

A combination temperature-indicating pyrometer and millivoltmeter is being sold by Thermo Electric Manufacturing Co. The pyrometer scale is 3.75 inches long and mirrored for accurate reading. Three scale ranges are available, all calibrated in Fahrenheit, Centigrade, and millivolts,

as follows: 800° F., 430° C , and 17 mv.; 1600° F., 865° C , and 36 mv.; and 2250° F., 1225° C , and 50 mv. Automatic compensation for internal resistance changes due to variation in ambient temperature is provided. Accuracy is within 1 %. 3 Universal Telereader Telecomputing Corp. has developed a Telereader which allows rapid and accurate measurements of film and oscillograph records. The Universal Telereader measures records ranging from 16- and 35-mm. film to 12-inch oscillograph paper up to 100 feet in length. Either translucent or opaque records can be handled. Three interchangeable projection lenses are provided with the Telereader to permit record magnification of 2 X , 4 X , and 11X, depending on the need. When used with companion instruments such as the Telecordex and a summary punch, the Telereader can print measurements· in decimal form on a typewriter supplied with the Telecordex, as well as record such information into punched cards. 4 Line and Curve Charts

Chart-Pak, Inc., is offering a kit of assorted charting materials for bar and curve line charts. The kit includes a plastic board, 28 different patterns on pressure-sensitive tapes, the necessary accessories for application, and instructions for making columnar, bar, line, and curve charts. Narrow tapes, Vie and l / « inch wide, are included in the kit. These narrow tapes, in colors and two printed styles, are used for making line and curve charts. The kit contains over 10,000 inches of tape. 5 Electronic Counter A high-speed electronic counter combined with a time base which is used to control the interval of counting has

been developed by Berkeley Scientific division of Beckman Instruments, Inc. The counting rate of this unit, called events-per-unit-time meter (EPUT), is from 20 to 100,000 events per second, and the counting interval is 1 second. The instrument therefore reads the unknown repetition rate directly in events per second. The events whose rate is to be determined may be any optical, physical, or electrical occurrences. These can be translated into changing voltages and defined directly through the instrument. The unit has been designed to count automatically and to display the number of events that occur during the 1-second interval. The display time is continuously variable from 1 to 5 seconds. The instrument is 166/a inches wide by l x /4 inches high by 13 inches deep and requires 117 volts ± 10%, 60 cycles. 6 Humidifier The Bahnson Co. is manufacturing a unit humidifier designed for use as a complete humidification system, for spot humidification in large spaces, for boosting the capacity of existing systems, or for precise humidity control in laboratories. Water is atomized by centrifugal force and distributed horizontally through a 360° opening. Any por tion of the discharge opening may be blocked off for directional dis tribution. Units evaporate up to 3 gallons per hour and will humidify several thousand cubic feet of room volume under normal conditions. The unit is made of noncorrosive metals with hammerloid finish, is 15.5 inches high, 18.25 inches in diameter, and weighs 55 pounds. I t is installed by suspending from the ceiling, then connecting water supply and electricity. 7 Grinding Media MeDanel Refractory Porcelain Co. has developed new high density grinding media which it is calling Super porcelain balls and brick. The media are chemically resistant and nonabsorbent. In a 1-year test run, it was demonstrated that these media accomplished an effective grinding job in a shorter time than the usual media. 8 Boron Trifluoride Counters Radiation Counter Laboratories, Inc., is making available a 2-atmosphere enriched boron trifluoride counter of all alu minum construction (except for the anode, Kovar seal, a n d

connector) which ensures minimum neutron capture in the counter shell. The end sections of the counter are "heli-arc" aluminum-welded, and the whole counter is helium leaktested before filling. I t is baked at 100° C. for 12 hours while being evacuated. A guard ring type construction is utilized. These counters are available in pressures of 150 and 12 cm. of mercury, and in three standard sizes: 1 by 6, 1 by 12, and 1 by 20 inches active length. ? Power Supply Kepco Laboratories, Inc., is now offering a standard voltage regulated power supply featuring one regulated Β supply and one unregulated filament supply, designed for relay rack mounting or bench use. The Β supply is continuously variable from 100 to 400 volts and delivers from 0 to. 150 ma. In the range 100 to 400 volts, the output voltage variation is less than 0.5% for both line fluctuations from 105 to 125 volts and load varia tions of minimum to maximum currents. Ripple is less than 5 mv., peak to peak. The unregulated filament supply is 6.3 volts, 10 amperes, unregulated, center tapped, and un grounded. IO Water Analyzer Accessory W. A. Taylor is offering a new lamp accessory for the Taylor water analyzer. The lamp measures 15.75 by 9.25 by 5.88 inches, and is fitted with a special Daylite glass fil ter and bulb which give uniform daylight conditions. I t oper ates on any type of 110-volt current. It is fully adjustable, so that it can be used with either long or short water analyzer tubes. The picture shows how the lamp is used with the water analyzer. 11 Flexible Heating Tape Scientific Glass Apparatus Co. has available three types of heating tape or band which can be wrapped around an object to be heated and connected directly to the current: standard, heavy insulated, and band. The standard tape, which is supplied in 0.5-inch width, 2- to 8-foot lengths, and produces 115 to 330 watts at 115 volts, consists of resistance wire covered with a double insu-
