easily approachable personality, he shows an exceptional interest in th>e welfare of the men who work with him. Guiding considerably more graduate students to the Ph.D. than the average professor, he still maintains a personal interest in each and exerts unusual effort to see that each is placed in professional work, which suits both the chemist and the position, an attitude which continues throughout their careers. The benefits of this trait are not reserved exclusively for the Ph.D.'s for he is constantly available t o the undergraduates for counsel and assistance and as a result has the profound respect and admiration of all those who have worked with him. His ability, judgment, and painstaking care in the placement of men is reflected in the high regard in which his recommendations are held in the chemical profession. As a teacher his pupils remember him as a man who teaches them to think along lines of organic chemistry as it is actually used, an approach which probably comes from his close contact with industry through both personal acquaintance and activities as a consultant. There are other matters than chemistry in his life. His family, Airs. Marvel and two red-haired youngsters, Molly and Jack, get a fair share of attention. His reputation as a fisherman is not to b e left out of the accounting. Only under the greatest pressure does he miss a summer trip to Wisconsin or Canada in search of muskies and his colleagues say that he has given up trying to report lengths and now describes his catches by the distance between their eyes. During recent years he has taken up bird watching, keeping accurate records of the dates first sighted, place, and even the weather, for each variety of bird. These are matched against those of his friends, with whom he misses no opportunity, during bright weather and spare time, to stroll through the woods. Indoor sport is not neglected and his ability at poker can be sworn to and at by former students and other close friends throughout the country who are contributors to the "Speed Fund." .
