The Miiller instrument offers magni fications exceeding one million diameters with a resolution greater than 3 ang stroms. The apparatus actually shows the atomic structure; crystal imperfec tions such as vacancies, interstitials, and dislocations can be seen. To date, the microscope can be used only on the refractory metals, and specimens must be formed with extremely fine needle tips.
