The 8th International Congress and General Assembly of the International Union of Crystallography was held August 13 to 27 at Stony Brook, New York, N.Y. A few of the new instruments shown at this meeting are briefly discussed below Automatic Single Crystal Diffractometer
Siemens America introduced a high precision a u t o m a t i c single crys tal diffractometer (Type A E D ) , designed for closed loop operational use with computers or manually, of t h e open X-circle design. All reflections of t h e reciprocal space hemispheres can be measured in t h e symmetrical position. A short focus-to-crystal distance, with a special collimator a r r a n g e m e n t , results in a high intensity of t h e measured reflections. The four-circle diffractometer h a s t h e axes of all circles factory set and t h e y are guaranteed to intersect within a sphere of 25 microns diameter. A magnetic clutch decoupling of t h e t h e t a / 2 t h e t a is provided for asym metrical operation. Other features are special photodigitizers for checking angular settings, a u t o m a t i c X - r a y s h u t t e r which closes during angular positioning of crystal, and others. The company also offers the Model PW 1170 automatic sample changer which pro vides for the X-ray diffraction analysis of up to 3 5 samples over a preset angular range. Other systems available for crystallog raphy include the N o r e l c o / A M R Model 8-600 microfocus X-ray system and the Modular l-C data handling system t o permit a broad range of options f o r system expansion o r modification. Rapid Glucose Analyzer
A liquid ion exchange electrode that has a 93-to-l selectivity for potassium ions over sodium ions in 0.1 molal aque ous solutions is expected to be excep tionally useful in flow-through systems for the measurement of physiological fluids. The new electrode's response to potassram ions is Nernstian between 5 X 10-* and 0.5 molal; effect of changes in pH between 3 and 9 is negli gible on the potassium response above 10~3 molal. Corning Scientific Instru ments, Corning Glass Works, Medfield, Mass. 02052 405
Three minutes from patient to an swer are all that are required for glu cose determinations with the ERA-2001 glucose analyzer. The instrument uses as little as 10 μΐ. of serum or plasma and 50 μ\. of urine and consistently maintains ± 2 % precision; the reading is linear for concentrations as high as 400 mg%. Core of the system is a polarographic oxygen sensor that measures rate of change in oxygen con centration as the sample (which needs no involved preparation) as is injected into an enzyme reagent solution. Fraction Collectors
Fraction collectors of 160 and 400 test tube capacity form fractions by measuring the weight of the material being collected using a balance with an accuracy better than 90 mg/fraction. Test tube holders advance from tube to tube using a mechanism which is simi lar to a ratchet based on only five mov ing parts. The 160-test-tube model re quires only 1.1 sq ft of lab bench area. Drop count and timed flow are optional accessories. Soltec Corp., P.O. Box 312, Encino, Calif. 91316 408
