The ACS Measurement Journals, the Analytical Division, and Pittcon 2018: A Busy Four Days
O
n February 26, 2018, Pittcon starts in Orlando, FL. This year, there are many Analytical Chemistry related events on the program. Of particular note, and as highlighted on the cover of this issue, the inaugural Advances in Measurement Science Lectureship Awards will be presented. This new award was jointly created by ACS Sensors, Analytical Chemistry, Journal of Proteome Research, and the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry (ANYL) to honor three scientists, representing major regions of the globe, who have had a major impact in the field of measurement science. The awardees are Prof. Neil Kelleher from Northwestern University, USA; Prof. Francesco Ricci from the University of Rome, Tor Vergata, Italy; and Prof. Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh from RMIT, Australia. Their expertise and recent research span the fields of biochemical sensors, electrochemical sensors, microsystems, nanotechnology, top down proteomics, and more. The winners will present their work, each with an invited colleague, at a symposium sponsored by the three measurement science journals, ANYL, and Pittcon on Tuesday morning, February 27, 2018. In addition, let me mention something new, a partnership between Pittcon, ANYL, and ACS Publications, resulting in a series of three new symposia, one for each of the three ACS measurement science journals. The first, sponsored by Analytical Chemistry and ANYL, highlights the importance of measurement science in environmental research: “New Measurement Approaches for Environmental Sampling and Measurement,” organized by Prof. X. Chris Le and scheduled for Monday afternoon, February 26, 2018. The second is sponsored by ACS Sensors and ANYL: “Frontiers in Sensors − In Situ Luminescent Sensing, From Cell to Organism,” and the third by the Journal of Proteome Research and ANYL, “Advancing Measurement of the Proteome,” with these two symposia being held on Tuesday morning and Wednesday afternoon, respectively. I recently was asked whether the symposium series will continue next year. The answer is Yes! The goals of our joint symposia are to showcase an important and up and coming area related to measurement science. I invite you to send me an email with your ideas for the Analytical Chemistry symposium for 2019. As in prior years, many of our journal’s editors will be attending Pittcon, and so there will be ample opportunities to speak with them and share your ideas for improving Analytical Chemistry. A good place to find us is Monday evening at the ACS Publications Measurement Science Journals Reception, cosponsored with the Division, being held on Monday night beginning at 6:00 pm at the Hyatt Regency in the Plaza International Ballroom. Of course, many other awards, symposia, and presentations are on the Pittcon schedule, as is their lab instrumentation exposition.
