O n e of the most c h a l l e n g i n g p r o b l e m s has b e e n the search f o r w a y s to r e c o g n i z e d r u g s u s e f u l i n d e p r e s s i o n . S i n c e attempts to d e v e l o p a n i m a l m o d e l s of d e p r e s s i o n b y u s i n g d r u g s to depress the c e n t r a l n e r v o u s syst e m h a v e p r o v e d less t h a n successful, other a p p r o a c h e s h a v e b e e n t r i e d ; f o r e x a m p l e , e m p i r i c a l t e c h n i q u e s h a v e b e e n u s e d to e v a l u a t e the a b i l i t y of p o t e n t i a l antidepressant
