News from Journal House H He B C N O Al Si P S

Coming in September In addition to the calendar (see below) the September issue will be accompanied by a copy of our Book Buyers Guide. Readers have come to depend on the BBG for current and complete information about books; now there is the added bonus that it lists educational software. Plus, all the information in the BBG is available on JCE Online, 24 hours a day, at http://www.jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/jcewww/resources/. To those of you who have already found this site we apologize for repeating this information—not everyone has discovered this treasure! Back-to-School Preparations If this is the August issue, then it is time to make backto-school plans. The Journal can help with these plans in a couple of ways. JCE Software has software for Windows, for Macintosh, for IBM PC-compatibles; multimedia software; a collection of CD ROMs (for both student use and presentation use); videotapes and videodiscs. Ask for our free Publications List that describes our offerings in detail and indicates how they can be used in your classroom; simply phone us at 1-800/991-5534. Another back-to-school aid is our Handbook for Teaching Assistants, a concise, handy, and inexpensive way to help both your teaching assistants and your students. Order copies of the Handbook by phoning our subscription fulfillment department at 1-800/691-9846. Interested in Books? If you are interested in books, consider joining our growing group of book reviewers. You will have noticed that there has been a great increase in activity in this section, but the number of reviews depends on the number of people willing to do reviews. If you are interested, contact Ed Walsh, our book review editor: phone: 814/332-5359; fax: 814/3322789; email: [email protected].

The cake is about 6 feet high, is being specially designed for this celebration, and is in one of the round forms of the periodic table. There will be additional refreshments at cash bars and entertainment by Glen Soulis, a roaming fiddler. Earlier in the evening, from 7 to 9 p.m., there will be 26 posters celebrating the JourThe Board of Publication nal and its history. In the morning there will be talks about the Journal ’s past, featuring speakers who have helped to shape and preserve this publication. The afternoon will focus on the Journal ’s present and future, as well as the future of scientific publishing in general. The Monday sessions will take place in the Convention Center.

1999 Calendar Preview Remember, next month you will find our 75th anniversary present in the plastic mailing sleeve along with your Journal—a special 4-color calendar for 1999. Each month you will be able to display on your wall a colorful chemical demonstration, every teacher’s favorite topic. At the right is a preview, in this case depicting in striking fashion the Belousov–Zhabotinskii reaction. A limited number of extra copies of these very striking calendars will be available—you may want one at home and one in your office or classroom. Or you may use them as attractive gifts. You will be able to purchase extra calendars for $5 each plus $2.50 shipping and handling (in the U. S.). Order forms will be available in the September issue. You will also be able to order copies at the 15th BCCE in Waterloo and at the Fall ACS Meeting in Boston. The graphic design of the calendar is by Betsy True, who designs our monthly covers.
