The Brush Still

Construction Details and Performance Data

Experimental results with the brush still show that a maximum component separation equivalent to nine or ten theoretical plates is obtained for a still 3 l / 2 inches in diameter and 1 1 inches high. These values are reached a t head liquid rates of less than 50 cc. per hour. However, as the rates are increased to 700 or 800 cc. per hour, the separatory power declines only to seven theoretical plates.

The brush still is distinguished b y the fact that in practice it can b e operated successfully with no head reflux a t all. The spiral type brush gives better performance than the strip type. Results indicate that the brush still should b e very useful for the fractional distillation of materials of high molecular weights.
