rule making, spillages, response to spillages, agency actions on-federal/ state/local levels, and industrial matters. Courses, meetings, and pertinent books are listed. The editor offers to locate people who can answer any questions that he himself cannot,

Synfuels Industry Development. Government Institutes, Inc., PO Box 5918, Washington, DC 20014. 1980. $25. This is one of the first books ever published on developing and financing the synthetic fuels industry. It grew out of a seminar held in Arlington, VA in February ( E S & T ,June 1980, p 652), and gives many views and facts on the subject from industry, government, consultants, and other expert establishments. Chemical, Biomedical, and Environmental Instrumentation. Ed Chait, Ed. Periodical, 4 issues/volume. Marcel Dekker Journals, PO Box 11305, Church St. Station, New York, NY 10249. $55 for institutions; $27.50 for individuals, annual subscription. This journal looks into microprocessors, advanced data handling, many instrumentation applications, software for analytical problem solving, and even self-teaching programs. Invention. development, and applications are also covered.

The Future of Synthetic Materials: The Petroleum Connection. Christopher Flavin. 5 5 pages. Worldwatch Institute, 1776 Massachusetts Ave., N W , Washington, DC 20036. 1980. $2, paper. Sometimes, synthetic materials can actually save energy, which is why they can become very important in an oilshort world. However, such materials are mostly dependent on oil/gas feedstocks. Coal, shale oil, and alcohol are unlikely to take over as feedstocks in the near future, the author says. But production and use of synthetics can be made more efficient, and recycling energy for making them can help greatly. Alternative Energy Sources: An International Compendium. T. Nejat Veziroglu, Editor-in-Chief. 1 1 volumes. Hemisphere Publishing Corp., 1025 Vermont Ave., Ste. 1000, Washington, DC 20005. 1980. $495 for the set. This set of volumes covers solar energy, both direct and indirect; geothermal; breeder reactors; hydropower; hydrocarbon conversion; hydrogen energy; economics; and other pertinent topics. The editor is director of the University of Miami's Clean Energy Research Institute. Waste Disposal Effects on Ground Water. David W. Miller, Ed. 512 pages. Premier Press, PO Box 4428, Berkeley, C A 94704. 1980. $16, paper: This book offers a comprehensive survey of the occurrence and control of groundwater contamination resulting from waste-disposal practice. It lists potential contaminants, applicable laws and regulations, and the like, and explains how groundwater works and what the fate of contaminants can be. The book also shows the present weakness of legal groundwater protection controls. The editor is a principal of the firm of Geraghty & Miller, Inc. ( E S &T, January 1980, p 38). Thermodynamic Data for Waste Incineration. xi 160 pages. The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 345 E. 47th St., New York, N Y 10017. $30 (add $4 shipping costs), hard cover. One way to dispose of waste, including hazardous waste, is by incineration. Is that a viable approach in all cases? This book helps to answer that question by providing numerical thermodynamic data for many substances.

Energy and Environmental Balance. Earl Finbar Murphy. vii 281 pages. Pergamon Press, Inc., Maxwell House, Fairview Park, Elmsford, N Y 10523. 1980. $25, hard cover. The dichotomy between energy and environmental demand is going to lead to the necessity for some hard choices. This work examines those choices, as well as industrial needs, urban sprawl, social necessities, changing environmental views, and possible future actions.

The Biogeochemistry of Mercury in the Environment. J. 0. Nriagu, Ed. xv 696 pages. Elsevier North-Holland, Inc., 5 2 Vanderbilt Ave., New York, NE' 10017. 1979. $136.50, hard cover. Remember the mercury poisonings in Japan, Iraq, and other countries several years ago? They were but one indication of mercury effects. This volume addresses mercury cycles, production, and uses; biological indicators; soil fate/transport; atmospheric and aquatic concentrations; poisoning epidemiology; and many other related matters.

Effects of Acid Precipitation on Terrestrial Ecosystems. T. C. Hutchinson, M . Havas, Eds. xi 654 pages. Plenum Press, 227 W. 17th St., New York, N Y 1001 1. 1980. $49.50, hard cover. With increased use of coal expected for the energy future, acid rain is a factor which must be considered carefully. This book contains many papers, given a t a Toronto (Canada) symposium, which discuss acid rain and snow, effects on plant nutrition, sulfur/nitrogen compound deposition, sensitive sites and soils, and many other topics related to this possible environmental menace.
