HE close c o n n e c t i o n b e t w e e n analytical chemistry and chemical engineering is self-evident. Indeed from some points of view the only difference between the two is that of magnitude. It is very natural, then, to consider analytical operations from a n engineering point of view. Engineers make frequent use of the flow diagram to outline engineering operations, .processes, and sequences. This engineering aid can be used to advantage in routine, analytical chemical analysis. The present discussion concerns itself with the use of the flow diagram or socalled flow sheet as applied to chemical analysis. It is not the purpose here to defend the practices of the "cook-book" chemist. An analytical chemist should by all means avoid this habit of watching the "book." But on the other hand, a few notes on procedure are almost essential in a commercial laboratory. This is especially true when several different unfamiliar determinations are under way a t the same time. Then, too, a beginner often finds it necessary to have notes at hand in the laboratory. The

use cf notes in the laboratory can only justify itself, however, by making for either speed, accuracy, or ease of operation. It is believed that the flow diagram can be of assistance in attaining these ends. I n order to show just what is meant by the flow diagram for use in analytical chemistry, two typical examples are shown in the figures. The actual sheets for laboratory use may be of notebook size or larger. Sheets 8*/2 X 11 inches may be drawn on heavy cards and protected with a coat of shellac. These cards can be issued to assistants in the laboratory and a very careful check on the routine may be established.

Interests associated with the Standard Wholesale Phosphate Company, Baltimore, of which George A . Whiting is president, will erect a direct-contact sulfuric acid plant in the Curtis Bay industrial district. This is the first plant of its kind t o be established in Baltimore. Actual construction work will begin iniJune. The new plant will have a n initial capacity of about 150 tons of fuming acid daily, but the various buildings will be so located on a 10-acre tract t h a t the construction of additions will be facilitated. It will be located on a tract immediately adjacent t o the big acid and fertilizer plants now operated by the Standard and allied companies, and excellent facilities for shipping by both land and water will be afforded. The new buildings will be modern, fireproof structures.
