T h e author’s foreword states t h a t “the (oxo) reaction has been little noted except in the patent literature,” a n d one of the purposes of this book is t o review this extensive literature. This questionable judgment aside, i t is doubtful whether t h e chapter devoted to the review h a s added substantially t o our knowledge of t h e oxo reaction. Since the author concedes the inappropriateness of the term “oxo” t o describe the process, how much more inappropriate then his use of t h e word “oxonating” which has neither the virtue of euphony nor the sanction of general acceptance. “Hydroformylation” which appears only once in the text is a widely-accepted a n d meaningful term.
