Ex Officio Councilors The President, President-Elect, directors, Executive Secretary, and Past Presi-
Nonvoting Councilors Because of the positions they hold, certain persons are designated as nonvoting councilors. They are as follows: Mr. Dale B. Baker, Director, Chemical Abstracts Service; Mr. Richard H. Belknap, Director of Planning, Fundamental Journals; Mr. C. B. Larrabee, Director of Publications, Applied Journals; Dr. Richard L. Kenyon, Editorial Director, Applied Journals; Mr. Robert V. Mellefont, Treasurer, American Chemical Society; Dr. W. Albert Noyes, Jr., Editor, Journal of the American Chemical Society; and The Journal of Physical Chemistry; Mr. James H. Stack, Director, Division of Public, Professional, and Member Relations. ACS Committees As is the case with most democratic governing bodies, both the Council and Board of Directors call upon many committees to study and make recommendations on matters within the areas of their respective responsibilities. Standing committees are selected from among the membership of these bodies and deal with subjects of basic and continuing importance to the Society. Each reports and makes recommendations to its respective parent body. The topic with which each committee deals is usually apparent from the name of the committee. Standing committees serve as clearing houses for comments and proposals regarding the conduct of present and future programs of the Society; all ACS members are urged to make their views known to them. Both the Council and the Board of Directors also provide for special or other committees for short term studies or for the execution of specific assignments. Membership on these committees is not limited to Councilors or Directors and terms of appointment are variable depending on the nature of the committee assignment. In the listing below each committee member's local section affiliation immediately follows his name. The date in parentheses represents the conclusion of term. If no date is given committee members are appointed annually. An asterisk indicates a division councilor. Committees of the Council Council Policy (Elected by the Council): This committee serves as the executive committee of the Council.
