The Kinetics of Nitration of Aromatic Nitro Compounds in Sulfuric Acid1 BY F. H. WESTHEIMER AND hf.

I. Introduction The kinetics of the nitration of aromatic nitro compounds in sulfuric acid solution has been studied with a view toward elucidating the mechanism of the reaction. In conformity with the pioneer work of blartinsen,2i t was found that the second order reaction between aromatic nitro compounds and nitric acid has a maximum rate in about 90yo sulfuric acid. More precise investigation of the conditions for maximum rate showed that it occurred a t a definite acidity (defined by Hammett’s N Ofunction) rather than a t a definite concentration of sulfuric acid. This discovery in turn :strongly suggested that an ionization of the nitric acid was involved in the determination of the maximum. The most probable ionizations are HSO3 4- HsSOi --+ HtNOa’ + HSO4(1) HKOs + 2HnSO4 +H30’ 4- SO2” + 2HSO4- ( 2 ) Ionizations of indicators which parallel both the type of iclnization shown in equation 1 and that shown in equation 2 were investigated. It was shown that an ionization of the type shown in equation 2 (xnd not that shown in equation 1) will account for the thousand-fold increase in rate ( 1 ) T h i s investigation of the kinetics of nitration in concentrated siilfuric acid was part of t h e work carried on for t h e National 1)efense Research Committee under contract OD-!I (NDCrc-4). T h e work was completed in t h e summer of 1911 and transmitted in a confidential report t o NI)I
