Viscosity, determined by means of an Ostwald pipet, was used as a measure of swelling or gelatinization of the starch. 2. Viscosity or swelling power of the reagents, in general, increased with concentration. Considerable variation in swelling or gelatinizing power of different reagents was noted. A Hofmeister series or lyotropic effect of anions was noted in the concentration-viscosity studies as follows: C1< B
