fully automated interfaces; a simple RP-LC/GC interface; increased use of capillary LC columns; gradient elution LC/GC; the development of RP-LC/ SFC; emphasis on FT-IR and MS detectors; replacement of LC/GC with SFC/GC (or SFC/SFC) wherever possible; and the analysis of compounds adsorbed onto solid matrices by SFE/ GC(orSFE/SFC). LC/GC, SFC/GC, and SFE/GC have great potential for the chromatographic analysis of samples that are too complex to be resolved by a single separation method. The option of using SFs gives added scope to LC/GC, and many of the lessons learned from LC/GC interfacing can be applied to SFC/GC and SFE/GC. Ilona Davies is grateful to the Science and Engineering Research Council (U.K.) for grants GR/C/ 59208, GR/C/59144, and GR/D/67415, which supported her Ph.D. research for two years. Mark Raynor was supported by the Science and Engineering Research Council (U.K.), grant GR/E/ 00556. Jacob Kithinji was supported by grants from The Royal Society of Chemistry and The British Council. The sample of shale oil analyzed in Figure 5 was kindly donated by Mustafa Tolay and Ekrem Ekinci of the University of Istanbul, Turkey. References (1) Giddings, J. C. Anal.
