The third volume of a four-volume treatise on multidisciplinary approaches to water and water systems contains articles on: biochemical oxygen-de mand measurement; chemical kinetics and dynamics in natural water systems; effect of structure and physical char acteristics of water on water chemistry; use of standards in the quality control of treated effluents and natural waters; design of measurement systems for water analysis; organic analytical chem istry in aqueous systems; inorganic analytical chemistry in aqueous sys tems; residual chlorine analysis in water and wastewater; and analysis for pesticides and herbicides in the water environment. [Information on Vol umes 1 and 2 is given in Anal. Chem., 44 (1), Θ8Α (1972).]

Coordination Chemistry, Vol 1. A r t h u r E. Martell, Ed. xxii + 577 pages. Van N o s t r a n d Reinhold Co., 450 West 33rd St., New York, N.Y. 10001. 1971. $32.50

This first volume of a three-volume series, designed to serve as a useful source of information and a cumulative treasury of new developments in the field of coordination chemistry, presents a fundamental and basic study of the bonding spectroscopy and chemical properties of metal complexes. Besides covering recent advances in the field, it describes significant early developments. The objective is to encompass the entire field and to present all important infor mation, irrespective of publication date. This book is No. 168 of the American Chemical Society's Series of Chemical Monographs.

studies of hemoglobin and its deriva tives; epr and nmr of enzymes; epr studies of free radicals in biological systems; iron and copper protein com plexes studied by epr; structural and conformational studies of polypeptides by high-resolution proton nmr and by the analysis of 13C, 14N, and 25Mg nuclides; and recent advances in meth ods and techniques of epr and Môssbauer spectroscopy. These reports were read at the Third International Conference on Magnetic Resonances in Biological Research, held at S. Margherita of Cagliari, Italy.

The third volume in this series contains chapters on the following topics: chromatographic behavior and chemical constitution (by H.-J. Petrowitz) ; reproducibility of -Revalues in tic (by R. A. de Zeeuw); thin-layer chromatography on alkaloids (by E. Tyihak and D. Vagujfalvi); thin-layer chromatography of porphyrins and complementary analytical methods (by Manfred Doss) ; thin-layer chromatography on polyamide layers (by Kung-Tsung Wang and Boris Weinstein) ; and thin-layer chromatography in air pollution research (by C. R. Sawicki and E. Sawicki). The Sadtler Guide to NMR Spectra. W. W. S i m o n s a n d M. Zanger. 600 pages. W i l m a d Glass Co., Inc., Route 40 and Oak Road, B u e n a , N.J. 08310. 1972. $38.50

This volume is intended for the chemist who has an understanding of the principles of proton magnetic resonance, but who wishes to acquire a ready familiarity with the characteristic appearance of the basic proton types. It is intended to serve as a concise instructional manual and also as a handbook of reference spectra. The book contains twelve sections which are systematically arranged by chemical class, similar to the format used in organic chemistry textbooks. Each section begins with a brief introduction describing the chemical shifts, coupling constants, and other special features which are typical of the class under consideration. Selected spectra are included in each section to illustrate characteristic absorbance patterns. There is also a brief commentary concerning the significant features of each spectrum. Spectra of 480 different compounds plus spectral data in tabular
