The Spirit of the Japanese Society for Process Chemistry The Japanese Society for Process Chemistry (JSPC) is a grassroots society established by industrial scientists and technical experts to support process chemistry along with academic scholars in the field. Since its founding in 2001, it has initiated many activities, including the development, enhancement, sharing, and extension of fundamental technology as well as human resources development and exchange. The continued success of the Society relies on the efforts of its members to bring high-quality chemical and pharmaceutical products to people who benefit from them. The Society sponsors summer and winter symposiums, forums in local branches, and the process “Lounge”, a multiday workshop covering lectures on process chemistry. The 2019 summer symposium, the Fourth International Symposium on Process Chemistry, will be held at Kyoto International Conference Center July 24−26, 2019. In this special issue of Organic Process Research & Development (OPR&D), several distinguished Japanese experts report leading-edge research results and reviews on all ongoing aspects of process chemistry in industry and academia. These reports include aspects such as syntheses, chemical engineering problems, analyses, new technologies, etc., that form the backbone of JSPC. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the fruitful contributions from all of the authors in this special issue. JSPC hopes that the present special issue will provide the framework for further activities and mutual exchange among a wide circle of process chemists. I would also like to express my gratitude to Dr. Kai Rossen, Editor-in-Chief of OPR&D, and Dr. Kazuhiko Takahashi, from the Editorial Advisory Board of OPR&D, for their helpful advice and cooperation in giving us this opportunity. I would also like to thank Professor Shuji Akai of Osaka University, Chairperson of the Publishing Committee of JSPC, for the hard work he put into the planning and organization of this project. Finally, I wish OPR&D continued and outstanding success in the future.
