Books Interlaboratory Cooperative Studies of Air Quality Measurement Methods. Publication Code No. 05-055099-17. 346 pages. 1975. Paperbound. $18

This book combines in one volume three reports obtained from experimental studies of the accuracy and precision of the measurement of atmospheric contaminants in the following three areas: measurements of lead in the atmosphere using the colorimetric dithiozone procedure; sampling stacks for particulates and collected residue; and determination of oxides of nitrogen in gaseous combustion products.

Standard X-ray diffraction patterns are presented for 57 substances. Twenty-five of these patterns represent experimental data, and the remaining 32 are calculated from structural data. The experimental X-ray powder diffraction patterns were obtained with an X-ray diffractometer. All d-values were assigned Miller indices determined by comparison with computed interplanar spacings consistent with space group extinctions. The densities and lattice constants were calculated, and the refractive indices were measured whenever possible. The calculated X-ray powder diffraction patterns were computed from published crystal structure data. Both peak height and integrated intensities are reported for the calculated patterns. Tables of Spectral-Line Intensities. NBS Monograph 145. 2nd ed. William F. Meggers, Charles H. Corliss, and Bour-

don F. Scribner. Part I: Stock No. 0303-01337, xv + 387 pages, $8.55. Part II: Stock No. 0303-01338, xv + 213 pages, $6.80

Like its predecessor published in 1961 as NBS Monograph 32, this new edition tabulates the intensity, character, wavelength, spectrum and energy levels of 39,000 lines between 2000 and 9000 Â in the spectra of 70 elements. It is again divided into two parts. Part I lists the lines by element, taking the elements in alphabetical order. Part II consolidates all observed lines into a single table arranged in order of increasing wavelength and a supplementary table of selected strong lines. In the first edition, energy levels were assigned to only about 25,000 of the 39,000 lines. Since then about 8,500 additional lines, chiefly in spectra of the rare earth elements, have been classified, and these are included in the new edition. Also incorporated in the new edition are about 9,000 improved wavelength values which have been measured since publication of the first edition. The third improvement to be found in this edition is in the intensity scale. The calibration of the region below 2350 A, which was published by Corliss in 1967, has been incorporated in the new edition.
