In one of the latest theories advanced to explain sintering, the process effects a louering of the free energy of the system by nucleation, reorystdlimtion, and grain growth as progressive stages, and the respective rates are related to the nature of the surface of the particles. Accordingly, particle shape and particle size distribution have specific effectson the diffusion phenomena. Except for interferences caused by evolution of gases, the sintering is analogous to fusion. But it can occur at temperatures far below the normal melting point of the lowest-melting phase. In addition to the expected surveys of the properties of refractory metals, cemented carbides, electrical materials, magnetic materials, friction products, dental alloys, and so on, considerable attention is given to an honest comparison of properties of powder metal products with those of the same materials manufactured in other ways.
