Transition state theory, in combination with the assumption that the reaction is translationally driven, is applied to experimental data on the translational energy dependence of a number of ion-molecule and neutral-neutral reactions. The agreement between experiment and theory is, in most instances, favorable. The results show that the theory is capable of reproducing the magnitude of a cross section curve near threshold (
