The longest shipment ever—through a snowstorm— with the I.C.C. looking on. On November 14, 1964, a shipment of liquid ethylene left our plant at Baytown, Texas and headed for a customer's plant in the Los Angeles area. Since this was a distance of 1,600 miles, the Interstate Commerce Commission decided to observe the safety aspects of this longest shipment ever, with particular attention to the possi­ bility of an undue rise in tank pressure. Like the plot of a movie, the unexpected struck in the form of a traffic-blocking snowstorm, in Arizona and New Mexico of all places! The scheduled 45-hour trip turned into one of 55 hours. When the truck finally pulled into the customer's plant at four o'clock in the morning, an I.C.C. representative was on hand to ex­ amine the pressure gages (he even photographed them). The reading? Only 29 pounds —precisely as predicted and well within the design limits of the trailer, clearly demonstrating the safety of this method of transporting ethylene. IM«M^U)W«
