-*- tific data, The National Bureau of Standards has adopted the International System of Units for use by its staff. From now on the Bureau will employ this system of units in all its publications except where use of these units would obviously impair communication. The International System of Units (designated 31 for Système International d'Unités) was defined and given official status by the 11th General Conference on Weights and Measures which met in Paris in October 1960. The SI is based on the following units: the meter (m) as the unit of length; the kilogram (kg) for mass; the second (s) for time; the ampere (A) for electric current; the degree Kelvin (° K) for temperature; and the candela (cd) for luminous intensity. Some of the more frequently used units of the SI and their symbols are listed in the table below.
