These superb mono and dibasic With Emery's extensive new pro duction facilities on stream, you can start or expand product improve ment and innovation programs based on the quality and availability of these outstanding acids: Emerox® Azelaic Acids, Empol® Dimer and Trimer Acids, and Emfac® Pelargonic and Special Acids. Azelaic Acid Azelaic acid is a 9-carbon, satu rated, aliphatic dibasic acid p r o duced by Emery's exclusive ozone oxidation process. The odd-number of carbon atoms exhibited by this acid generally reflects in lower melt ing points and improved flexibility in end-products, compared to simi lar even-carbon dibasic acids. Of the three grades of Azelaic Acid produced, Emerox 1144 is the purest and is particularly attractive to polymer producers because: • It is moderately priced — 25φ a pound less than sebacic acid — yet offers lighter color, superior color stability, and extremely low monobasic acid content. 18 C&EN

• It provides unique properties to polyester, polyamide, and urethane high polymers. Emerox 1144 possesses light ini tial color, excellent color stability (see table), and extremely low monobasic acid content. It improves low temperature impact strength, without sacrificing high tempera ture performance. Emerox 1144 produces 6/9 nylons g e n e r a l l y c o m p a r a b l e to 6/10

nylons in performance, but at much lower cost. T h e s e n y l o n s also possess excellent abrasion resist ance, low water absorption, high impact resistance, and an excellent balance of polymer properties. acids are now in greater supply. duced by the polymerization of unsaturated fatty acids at mid-molecule. Emery produces five commercial grades of dimer acid and two of trimer acid, all of varying composition to meet all of your requirements. The purest of all dimer acids is Empol 1010. It also has the lightest color and low monobasic acid content and low unsaturation. With its high dibasic acid content, Empol 1010 and various derivatives are well suited for use as a monomer or comonomer for the preparation of high polymers of the polyamide, polyester, or urethane type, to impart unique characteristics — such as, improved adhesive properties in nylons, and excellent stability and resistance to thermal degradation in polyamides. properties to surface coatings, plasticizers, lubricant esters, stabilizers, and other end products. The four grades produced by Emery offer variations in cost, composition, and performance properties. The unusual properties of Emfac 1202 Pelargonic Acid are of great value to manufacturers of many products. It is a unique Co straight chain, water white, liquid monobasic acid. Its derivatives have outstanding color stability, and better

low temperature properties than corresponding derivatives based on even carbon-length acids. Emfac 1202 imparts unequalled low temperature performance in synthetic lubricants and specialty vinyl and acrylic plasticizers.
