~ h i Layer n chromatography Method A method and apparatus for recording data and saving thin layer chromatography sheets 'have been used in our laboratory. Using plastic-hacked precoated 7% X 7%-in. sheets, a strip about K s in. wide is removed from the sheet 6% in. from the bottom. The top 1%in. is used to record the data required. Data on our sheets includes date, samples run, solvent system and method of visualization. The sheet is developed in the desired solvent system and development is complete when the solvent front has reached the 'he in. line. The sheet is then treated for visualization. After visualization, the tle sheets are sandwiched between sheets of acrylic plastic (Chemical Rubber Co. stock No. 528125) so they may be stored for later review. An apparatus for holding the sheets when preparing them is shown. Materials needed for construction are %- and %in. thick Plqxiglas and plastic cement. Three pieces of 5-in. are needed using the following dimensions: 8% X 9 in., 4% X 9 in. and 314 X 9 in. The three pieces of quarter inch needed are K X 9 in. and two pieces of 'k X 8% in.
