Mercaptans h a v e long been used a s chain transfer agents to modify free radical polymerization reactions in the production of rubber a n d plastic products. They have a w a y of letting molecular chains of elastomers or plastics grow to a preset limiting range, cutting off the chains, a n d starting n e w ones.
