This Week In Business Manufacturers' shipments of passenger car tires during the year 1963 amounted to 122,016,638 units. This is the highest recorded volume of shipments in the history of the tire industry, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association, Inc. It represents an increase of 4.38% over the previous record reached in 1962 when 116,893,538 units were shipped. The 1963 shipment record includes two other highs: Original equipment shipments amounted to 41,914,957 tires, 11.84% above the 37,478,524 units shipped in 1962; replacement shipments amounted to 79,135,551
tires, an increase of 0.85% above the 78,472,205 units shipped in 1962, the previous record. These shipments were supported by a new record production of 122,234,335 passenger car tires for 1963, 3.5% above the previous high figure of 118,103,420 units produced during 1962. Inventories at the end of 1963 amounted to 25,440,234 tires, an increase of 4 . 9 % above 1962's level. Shipments of truck and bus tires during 1963 were 16,598,416 tires, an increase of 5.36% above 1962 shipments of 15,754,000, and the second highest on record. A peak of 16,764,000 units was

reached in 1951. Production of 16,889,738 truck and bus tires in 1963 was 7 . 1 % above the 1962 output of 15,769,000 units, and was the third highest on record. Inventories of truck and bus tires at the end of 1963 amounted to 3,967,120, an increase of 9.8% above the 3,612,000 tires in inventory at the end of 1962. Automotive inner tube shipments in 1963 were 40,780,596 units, about 1.3% below 1962 shipments of 41,301,971 tubes. Production in 1963 dropped to 39,656,822 inner tubes, a drop of 2.9% below the 40,836,097 tubes produced during 1962.
