THIXOTROPY PROBLEMS? .. .viscosity?... suspension? BAKER'S new brochure has the solutions.

THIXOTROPES FOR RHEOLOGICAL CONTROL

BAKER thixotropes are the most effect i v e c o l l o i d a l f l o w agents for a w i d e range of commercial compositions.They are low in cost...completely physical in nature...they require no kind of chemical reactivity with other materials in the liquid. And the rheological properties imparted are permanent and truly thixotropic.They aid product appearance... are inert...non-hygroscopic...durable... dustless for easy handling...and have outstanding package stability. BAKER's line of thixotropes includes: Thixcin® E, Thixcin R, Thixatrol® S t . . . non-toxic powders, completely organic.

M-P-A®.an organic paste which controls flow and also suspends pigments and other finely-divided s o l i d s . . . w i t h little or no increase in viscosity. It is non-toxic and supplied as a pre-dispersion in mineral spirits, toluene, xylene, butanol or dioctyl phthalate.

Shows you how BAKER thixotropes can control the viscosity and suspension characteristics of a wide range of products. ..precisely and economically. What is a thixotrope? A thixotrope is an agent that swells and disperses in a liquid vehicle to form its own stable network of colloidal particles. The struct u r e is s t r o n g enough to resist low s t r e s s e s and b o o s t s t h e l i q u i d ' s apparent viscosity under such conditions as sagging, settling and phase separation.

Oxygenated Solvents Alcohols Glycols Glycol Ethers Esters and Ketones

Viscosity of a liquid depends on the shear stress to which it is being subjected at any given moment. To assure optimum flowability in a product, its viscosity must be controlled under both high-magnitude shear ( e n c o u n t e r e d during processing and application)... and low-magnitude shear (forces such as gravity and s u r f a c e t e n s i o n ) . For ease of processing and application, a low-viscosity system under high shear is desirable.

Miscellaneous Liquids Polyglycols Plasticizers Liquid Resins, Solventless and Solvated

Optimum suspension of pigments and other finely-divided solids in a liquid depends on the nature and viscosity of the liquid...and, the size, density and quantity of the solids. For control of sagging, slumping, settling, sedimentat i o n and phase s e p a r a t i o n , a h i g h viscosity system under low-shear is needed. By proper formulation it is possible to have both characteristics: low viscosity under high-shear... and high viscosity under low-shear. And using a thixotrope is the best and most economical way of imparting the proper flow (rheological) properties to a liquid.

Experimentation is the best way to determine the exact amount of thixotrope to add to a product. Generally, 0.1% to 3% of a BAKER thixotrope is all that is necessary to suspend solid particles in most liquids. Normally, up to 7% addit i o n w i l l t h i c k e n simple liquids to a paste consistency.
