Abstract: Chemical shift data for the “Ti and 49Tinmr of TiCI4,TiBr,, and TiF62-, and binary mixtures of TiCI4TiBra,TiCI4-TiI4,have been determined. The order of increasing shielding of the titanium nucleus by the halogen ligands is I, Br < CI. The resonance absorptions for TiCI4and TiBr4are unshifted on dilution of these compounds in inert solvents. This provides evidence for the existence of monomeric molecules in the neat liquids. The mixture of TiCI4and TiBr4showed just one resonance signal, the chemical shift of which varied linearly with the mole fraction of the components, indicating rapid exchange between the parent compounds and the- mixed species TiCI,Br, TiCI2Br2,and TiCIBra.

xtensive chemical shift data for the nmr of various atoms in tetrahedral or pseudo-tetrahedral halogen-containing environments have been reported in recent years. Apparently without exception, the order of increasing shielding of the nucleus under investigations is C1 < Br < I. In particular, the nuclei for which this trend has been found are 11B,1,213C,3-7 27Al,8 29Si 9 , l O 31p 1 1 , 1 2 71Ga,13 115In 1 4 and 119Sn.15 While investigating the feasibility of using 47,49Ti nmr to derive information on structure and bonding in titanium compounds, we have obtained surprising chemical shift data for the titanium(1V) tetrahalides. Our results show that the order of increasing nuclear magnetic shielding is anomalous, uiz., I, Br < C1. The natural abundances and sensitivities16 (relative to ‘H at constant field) of the two stable isotopes of titanium with nonzero spins are: 47Ti( I = 5 / 2 ) , 7.3%,
