Titanium Tetrachloride (Titanium(IV) Chloride) Part 4, Monographs for Reagent Chemicals: General Descriptions, Specifications, and Tests eISBN: 9780841230460 Tom Tyner Chair, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents James Francis Secretary, ACS Committee on Analytical Reagents
ABSTRACT This monograph for Titanium Tetrachloride provides, in addition to common physical constants, a general description including typical appearance, applications, change in state (approximate), aqueous solubility, and density. The monograph also details the following specifications and corresponding tests for verifying that a substance meets ACS Reagent Grade specifications including: Assay and Color (APHA).
TiCl4
Formula Wt 189.67
CAS No. 7550-45-0
Note: This reagent reacts violently with water, producing hydrogen chloride, titanium oxychloride, and titanium oxides. It fumes strongly when exposed to moist air, and the reaction is very exothermic. The reagent will darken with age.

TESTS Assay (By oxidative titration after reduction of titanium). Weigh accurately 0.8 g with the use of a Smith weighing burette, and add cautiously to 100 mL of 10% sulfuric acid reagent solution. Activate the zinc amalgam of a Jones reductor by passing 100 mL of 10% sulfuric acid reagent solution through the column. Discard the acid, and place 25 mL of ferric ammonium sulfate indicator solution in the receiving beaker under the column. Pass the sample solution through the reductor, followed by 100 mL of 10% sulfuric acid reagent solution and then 100 mL of water (using these to rinse the sample beaker). Collect the eluent in the receiving beaker, making sure the column is maintained wet. Add 10 mL of phosphoric acid, and titrate with 0.1 N potassium permanganate volumetric solution to a pink end point. Run a blank, and make any necessary correction. One milliliter of 0.1 N potassium permanganate, corrected for the blank, corresponds to 0.01897 g of TiCl4.
