Traveilng Waves in the Acldic Nitrate-Iron( I I) Reaction: Analytical Description of the Wave Velocity Gyorgy Pbta,* Istvin Lengyel, and Gyorgy Bema Institute of Physical Chemistry, Kossuth h j o s University, H-4010Debrecen, Hungary (Received: August 24, 1990)

The velocity of the convection-free traveling waves in the acidic nitrattiron(I1) reaction (the famous "brown-ring" reaction in analytical chemistry) has been measured as a function of the initial reactant concentrations. The most striking result of our experiments is that the wave velocity decreases with increasing initial concentrations of the Fez+ions. The analytical formula c = 2(D[H+]0)~/~(kl[N0
