Organic Synthesis Highlights V. Edited by HansGu¨nther Schmalz (University of Cologne) and Thomas Wirth (Cardiff University). Wiley-VCH: Weinheim. 2003. xii + 440 pp. $75.00. ISBN 3-527-30611-0. This book is a collection of about 40 articles that were selected from the “Highlights” section of Angewandte Chemie I (1998-2001), from the “Concepts” section of Chemistry - A European Journal (2000-2001), and from the review section of Nachrichten aus der Chemie (1999-2001). The chapters are organized into the following parts: (I) Synthetic Methods, in which new developments in synthetic methodologies are described and new and improved techniques are discussed, and (II) Applications, in which the total syntheses of various natural and nonnatural compounds are delineated. Measurement Uncertainty in Chemical Analysis. Edited by Paul De Bie` vre (Kasterlee, Belgium) and Helmut Gu¨nzler (Weinheim, Germany). Springer-Verlag: Berlin, Heidelberg, New York. 2003. xii + 284 pp. $89.95. ISBN 3-540-43990-0. This book features key papers on the topic of uncertainty in chemical measurement that appeared in the journal Accreditation and Quality Assurance in 1997-2002. In the Preface, De Bie`vre stresses that this is not an “integrated book”, but rather a collection of papers to describe the still rather controversial concept of uncertainty. In this book, various interpretations of uncertainty are given, as are various methodologies for evaluating it. A sampling of the chapters includes “Chemical metrology, chemistry and uncertainty of chemical measurements”, “Evaluation of uncertainty of reference materials”, “Calibration uncertainty”, and “A practical approach for assessment of

Magnetic Resonance in Food Science: Latest Developments. Edited by P. S. Belton (University of East Anglia), A. M. Gil (University of Aveiro), G. A. Webb (University of Surrey), and D. Rutledge (Institut National de la Recherche Agron, Paris). The Royal Society of Chemistry: Cambridge. 2003. x + 272 pp. $150.00. ISBN 0-85404-886-3. This book was developed from four symposia held during an international conference on the titled subject at the Institut National Agronomique Paris-Grignon in September 2002. The book is organized into four sections, whose headings were derived from the titles of the symposia: Magnetic Resonancethe Developing Scene; Food: The Human Aspect; Food: Structure and Dynamics; and Food Quality Control. A subject index completes the book. JA0335521
