Benjamin Franklin Memorial, The Franklin Institute Science Museum. The Franklin Institute is the oldest organization in the U.S. devoted to the study and promotion of mechanical arts and applied sciences.

Sunday, August 17 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Undergraduate Hospitality Center. All undergraduates are invited to the hospitality center to eat breakfast and network with faculty, students, ACS staff, and the national meeting program planners. Career information pamphlets will also be available. 9:30–10:45 a.m. Workshop: How to Be a Green Chapter. What is Green Chemistry? Successful Green Chemistry chapters will share ideas. You will walk away with a plan that meets the “Green Chemistry” criteria that your chapter can put into action. 11 a.m.–1 p.m. Chemistry in Action Workshop: Reaching Out to Younger Students. Attend this workshop to learn some simple, handson chemistry experiments to do with elementary school-aged children during National Chemistry Week or when you work with large groups or classrooms of children. 1:30–3 p.m. Global Change Symposium. This symposium outlines the many aspects of global climate change and possible strategies to reduce its effects. Talks include: “What Do Polar Regions Have to Tell Us About Global Change?” by Berry Lyons; “Climate Change: A 21st Century Challenge” by Tony Brocoli. 3:30–5 p.m. Graduate School Reality Check. Session Leader: Eric Borguet, Temple University. A panel of graduate students, faculty, industry representatives, and university recruiters will discuss graduate school in the chemical sciences: how to get into the program of your choice, stay in, and successfully complete an advanced degree in the chemical sciences. 5 p.m.–6:30 p.m. Graduate School Ice Cream Social. Treat yourself to ice cream and meet representatives from graduate schools who will introduce you to their graduate school programs in the chemical sciences and answer any questions you may have.

Monday, August 18 8 a.m.–5 p.m. Undergraduate Hospitality Center. Same as the Sunday listing, above. 8:15–9:45 am Graduate School Recruiter’s Breakfast. Begin your day with a nutritious breakfast and have a second opportunity to meet representatives from graduate schools who will introduce you to their graduate school programs in the chemical sciences and answer any questions you may have.

10–11:30 a.m. Clean Energy Symposium. Learn about alternative energy methods that address possible solutions to the global warming crisis. Topics include: “Clean Energy in a Warming World” with Kristen Graf; “Energy Sustainability for the Twenty-first Century” with Martin Abraham. 11:45 a.m.–1:45 p.m. Eminent Scientist Lecture and Luncheon. Enjoy lunch and listen to Nobel Laureate F. Sherwood Rowland who will reflect on his career in “A Life in Tracer Chemistry”. 2:30–4:30 p.m. Undergraduate Poster Session. Undergraduate students will present research papers in the following areas: analytical chemistry; biochemistry; chemical education; environmental, inorganic, medicinal, physical, and polymer chemistry; and nanotechnology. Sponsored by the Division of Chemical Education and co-sponsored by the Divisions of Analytical Chemistry, Bio­ chemical Technology, Biological Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, and Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering. 8–10 p.m. Sci-Mix/Successful Student Affiliates Chapter Posters. Successful Student Affiliates Chapters will showcase their activities during the largest ACS poster session that includes divisional posters and exhibits as well.
