ACS NEWS ▸ Akron Section Award to Christopher Jaroniec Christopher Jaroniec, Professor of Chemistry and Evans Scholar at Ohio State University, is the recipient of the 2017 ACS Akron Section Award, given by the ACS Akron Section to promising young industrial or academic scientists. The award consists of $1,000 and a plaque. Jaroniec’s research is focused on the development of multidimensional magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR techniques and their application to the detailed analysis of the moChristopher lecular structure, Jaroniec conformational dynamics, and intermolecular interactions of biological macromolecules. He will receive the award on Nov. 14 at the University of Akron. He will give two presentations, titled “Solid-State NMR Structural Studies of Proteins Using Paramagnetic Probes” and “Molecular Mechanisms of Prion & Amyloid Propagation Explored by Solid-State NMR Spectroscopy.”—LINDA WANG
▸ Nominations sought for Morley Medal The ACS Cleveland Section seeks nominations for the 2018 Edward W. Morley Medal, which recognizes “significant contributions to chemistry through achievements in research, teaching, engineering, research administration and public service, outstanding service to humanity, or to industrial progress,” according to the section’s website. The area of eligibility includes parts of the U.S. and Canada within about 400 km of Cleveland. The medal includes an honorarium of $2,000. Send nominations to Mark J. ▸ Herty Medal seeks nominations The ACS Georgia Section seeks nominations for the 2018 Charles Holmes Herty Medal, given annually to recognize the work and service of an outstanding chemist from the southeastern U.S. Nominees may come from academia, government, or industry and must have resided or worked in the Southeast for more than 10 years. The award honors Ira Remsen, the first chair of the chemistry department at Johns Hopkins University and the university’s second president.
