NEW PRODUCTS, continued chines, foam rubber testing machines, and abrasion testing machines. The equipment is implemented by in struments for checking the accuracy of rubber hardness testers. Punch presses for the preparation of specimens are also provided. The machines permit tests in conformance with standard ASTM specifications. 13 Ion Exchange Resins Analytical resins with known proper ties are being prepared by Bio-Rad lab oratories to permit standardized, repro ducible procedures to be carried out in laboratory applications. The stable
styrene resins are processed from Dowex 1, 2, and 3 for anion exchange and from Dowex 50 for cation exchange. They have capacities ranging from 5.2 to 3.0 meq. per dry gram. The Dowex starting material is sized, purified by alternate acid, base, and organic solvent cycles, and each batch individually analyzed and defined by moisture content, cross linkage, capac ity, size distribution, and porosity. 14 Vacuum Gage A Pirani vacuum gage has been de veloped by National Research Corp. for operation in the pressure range be
tween 1 and 1000 microns. The Model 516 features a low impedance power rec tifier that eliminates the need for voltage adjustments during operation. One meter is used for both voltage adjust ment and pressure reading. A compen sating element mounted inside the cabi net facilitates installation and trans portation of the gage. The outgassing circuitry is incorpo rated on the pressure range selector switch to permit outgassing at any pres sure without danger to the filament. The instrument has a 10-foot gage cord, but cords up to 100 feet in length may be used without loss of accuracy. 15 Fume Hood Hoods designed by A. B. Stanley Co. feature a parabolic cutout said to result in better control of air velocity. The cut out is made directly above the sash open ing or work area and increases the air passing from the room directly into the hood plenum chamber in proportional amounts as the sash is lowered. This results in a constant speed of air drawn across the working surface, unaffected by the position of the sash hood, accord ing to the manufacturer, thereby reduc ing high velocity at the working surface. 16

Glass Lathe The Bethlehem Lab-Lathe, manufac tured by Bethlehem Apparatus Co., Inc., is designed for specialized labora tory glass work, as well as certain pro duction operations. It can be used to make ring seals, tees, flanges, tapers, glass fusings, closures, and variety of re pairs.
The machine has a sleeve-grip chuck that allows most forms of glass work to be set up without use of extra acces sories. Tubing of any length and up to 100 mm. in diameter can be mounted through the spindle. Extension bars grip a variety of glass shapes in sizes up to 12 inches diameter, with eccentric settings made as required. The unit can be adapted for use as a vertical lathe. A floating tailstock with finger-tip control is said to eliminate backlash. It can be detached when large pieces are being worked on the headstock. The equipment is provided with an auto matic brake, floating burner carriage, pinion-bar drive the full length of travel, For further information, see coupon on page 37 A ANALYTICAL
