unchanged. T h i s development should m a k e it possible to p a c k a g e foods, colognes, o t h e r toiletries c o n t a i n i n g perfumes, a r o m a t i c solvents, min e r a l and vegetable oils a n d aerosol formula tions in polyethylene films or flexible con t a i n e r s — without loss of volatile c o n s t i t u e n t s or entry of d e t e r i o r a t i n g gases. T h e fluorination process is claimed to be simple and economical. Film or bottles are washed free of lint, grease, dust and all for eign m a t t e r which m i g h t cause fluorine to ignite the polyethylene. After this, the film or c o n t a i n e r is c o n t a c t e d with p u r e fluorine or a fluorine-inert gas m i x t u r e , at room tem p e r a t u r e or at u p to 5 0 ° C . T h e length of con tact varies d e p e n d i n g upon the e q u i p m e n t , fluorine c o n c e n t r a t i o n , t e m p e r a t u r e and thick ness of film or bottle. While clarity, flexibility, tensile s t r e n g t h , heat scalability and ultraviolet t r a n s m i t t a l a r e claimed to remain u n c h a n g e d , p e r m e a b i l ity of the polyethylene is d e c r e a s e d many fold. In a typical test with a volatile liquid, 5.6% of ally] e a p r o a t e was lost from an u n t r e a t e d polyethylene bottle in 40 days. Only 0 . 0 5 % was lost from a bottle which h a d received a six-hour fluorine t r e a t m e n t . T e s t i n g for oxy gen transfer, an u n t r e a t e d film t r a n s m i t t e d 303 cc per 100 s q u a r e inches of surface in 24 h o u r s . A treated film t r a n s m i t t e d only 46 cc.

Silicone Additives Insure Uniform Cell Structure in Flexible Urethane Foams Silicones a r e now b e i n g a d d e d to flexible p o l y u r e t h a n e foams to give smaller, m o r e even cell s t r u c t u r e , uniform resilience and flexi bility, and b e t t e r a p p e a r a n c e . O n e type is a water-dispersible emulsion which can he added directly to the catalyst p h a s e of the foam system. T h e m a n u f a c t u r e r r e c o m m e n d s that it be a d d e d as the last com ponent when m a k i n g up this p h a s e , and c l a i m s

that it will r e m a i n uniformly d i s p e r s e d from several d a y s to two weeks in most catalyst systems. A n o t h e r type is a fluid a d d e d directly to t h e p r e p o l y m e r and dispersed by t h o r o u g h agitation. Flexible p o l y u r e t h a n e foams have evoked wide-spread interest as insulation for both i n d u s t r i a l and c o n s u m e r use, as c u s h i o n i n g , and for a variety of specialty a p p l i c a t i o n s . T h e y can be p r o d u c e d from the reaction of polyesters with d i i s o c y a n a t e s . An i n t e r m e d i ate that can he used to p r o d u c e the polyesters is u.s.i. ISOSEBACIC® Acid, a m i x t u r e of C-10 ibasic acids.
