Versatile-andInexpensive Screw-Cap Vessels for Medium Pressure Reactions and Processes Run under an Inert Atmosphere Mikael Begtrup Department of Organic Chemistry, The Technical University of Denmark, DK-2800 Lyngby, Denmark Reactions requiring temperatures higher than those of the boiling points of the solvents are traditionally run in expensive autoclaves or in sealed glass tubes. Sealing of glass tubes requires skill and caution. For small scale reactions a t medium pressure (up to -10 bar), inexpensive and ready-to-make screw-cap closed reaction vessels are much easier to handle. Satisfactory results have been obtained with vessels made from commercial 13mm glass screw-thread joints. Different types are presented in the figure and can he manufactured by any professional glassblower. The vessels are closed with standard Quick Fit 13-mm plastic screw caps equipped with metal and rubber disks. Butyl ruhher and Neoprene are most suitable, the latter being the more resistant to higher temperatures. In the case of aggressive solvents or reactants, the appropriate ruhher type should he found by running a blank experiment. Alternatively, a disk of Teflonfoil may be used to protectthe rubber disk. The screw cap is carefully tightened with the finger tips. Using too much force in closing may lead to breakage of the glass screw thread. During reactions a t elevated pressures the vessels must always he protected by metal containers. In the case of long, cylindrical vessels, an iron water pipe closed a t hoth ends with mufflers may serve. Reactions may he run in a thermostated heating cabinet or, when stirring is required, in a cylindrical aluminum block, furnished with a screw cap for security, horings for short cylindrical or pear-shaped vessels, and a hole fitting a contact thermometer. The latter is connected to the thermo-relay of a magnetic stirrer mounted below a hot plate, on which the aluminum block is placed. Proper current adjustment makes it possible to maintain reaction temperatures within the block to an accuracy of about f1 "C. Temperature equilibrium is reached slowly (after -1 h) with pear-shaped vessels placed in cylindrical borings unless a liquid heating transfer medium (e.g., paraf-

fin) is placed in the boring. Reactions in methanol have routinely been run at 140 O C without any loss of material. Processes sensitive to moistureor oxygen can he rununder an inert atmosphere in the screw-cap closed vessels using a metal disk with a hole. This allows perforation of the ruhher disk with a syringe for evacuation as well as introduction of inert gas and reactants. With a 1-mm hole and a corresponding syringe, medium-pressure reactions can he run also after puncture of the system. In this case the use of two butyl rubber disks is recommended.
