VERSATILE REDUCING AGENTS HYDROSULFITES AND SULFOXYLATES

.. .

Textiles, paper pulp, synthetic rubber—all these industries get the results they want by using hydrosulfltes and sulfoxylates at crucial stages of their processes. The chemicals act as reducing agents, stripping agents and bleaches and, in the case of synthetic rubber, activate a catalyst. Nopco and its subsidiary Jacques Wolf produce a wide variety of these useful compounds. Among those currently in demand are Hydrozin,® a stripping agent for wool and synthetics; also a component of the oxidation-reduction pairs used in emulsion polymerization of polyvinyl acetate. Another compound— sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate (AWC), a redox component for emulsion polymerization of synthetic rubber—is used for application printing of vat colors and discharge printing on all textiles. It also acts as a stripping agent for acetates and woolens. A third compound—sodium hydrosulfite—is a bleaching agent for kaolin clays and mechanical pulps used in papermaking. Its use with mechanical pulps is extremely economical, because a very small quantity goes a long way. The textile industry uses it for vat dyeing and the synthetic rubber industry as an oxygen scavenger in the butadiene recycle during low-pressure synthetic rubber polymerization.

New way to discourage rust Nopcochex® RD is a highly effective oil-soluble corrosion in hibitor. Due to its polarity, the metal attracts the oil particles but rejects the water phase. It works excellently on bar stock, sheet steel, tools, castings, assemblies and storage tanks, and in final tumbling operations of ferrous metal parts. It can be applied by brushing, dipping, spraying or slushing.

The ideal thickener for printing

textiles-

cotton rayon, cellulose acetate and all types of man-made fabrics—is Superclear.® It is prepared entirely from natural vegetable gums under exacting conditions. It is recommended as an addition to the pigment pad liquor to prevent migration of color. It does, in fact, maintain uniform color value from selvage to selvage and from end to end. The amount to be used depends upon the type of dyestuff, the depth of shade wanted, the type of fiber, and the weight of goods. For brighter colors, Superclear has no equal. For further
