NEW BOOKS man Effect, and Electronic Spectra. Resonance Studies is divided into discussions of Xuclear Magnetic Resonance, Electron Spin Resonance, and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance. The treatment of each topic is generally sound and as up to date as may be expected in a compendium of this type. The book will doubtlessly be used by many scientists. Some of the discussions are advanced enough that they probably will not be used by graduate students for introductions to

the subjects. The book should be valuable to professional scientists who wish to get information in techniques other than their own specialties. It will also serve scientists in pursuing their own specialties by virtue of the rather general completeness of references and of the quality of the expositions. The editors have obtained the services of seventeen scientists, each of high repute in his own field, for the material presented. Although this book is one of a series

of books on Methods of Experimental Physics, there is a considerable fraction of it devoted to the theoretical aspects of the various subjects. It is felt that insufficient discussion is given to the present experimental limitations that exist for the various techniques and to an analysis of the fundamental prob lems that must be solved to relax these limitations. As stated at the beginning, this book is of excellent quality; however, there is something unexciting about it. This is because most of the material has been covered in other, somewhat simi lar, reviews. This should not detract from this particular book but rather emphasize the need for other types of compendia in the coming years. An investigator interested in pursuing a particular phenomenon that can be studied by several of these techniques must study the individual sections of the subject book and extract from each those elements pertinent to his needs. It is hoped that some of the similarly excellent compendia of the future will be oriented around particular phenomenological areas rather than given to the broad coverage of so many, some what diverse, disciplines. ..such as detect ..•*****> -"τ— air pollution to .001 ppm Standard VECO Thermistors in matched pairs solve manycomplex gas analysis problems. In addition to providing air pollu tion data, they're also useful in thermometric titration, or even in a simple temperature bridge. That's why research and development men come to VECO for the answers to a wide range of design problems.

This book is written for chemists, laboratory technicians, and others con cerned with testing industrial and com mercial products for acceptability and performance. There arc ten sections: petroleum products; paint, varnish lacquer, and allied products; paper and paper products; soaps, detergents, and cleaners ; ferrous metals and alloys ; nonferrous metals and alloys ; textile fabrics and fibers; inks, chalks, and art supplies; fertilizers, soil condi tioners, and pesticides; and an appen dix of reagents, chemicals, and other useful data and tables.
