Virtual Issue: Work from the Organic Reactions Catalysis Society Meeting 2016 Organic Process Research & Development has recently published a series of papers that were presented at the 26th meeting of the Organic Reactions Catalysis Society (ORCS, http://www. orcs.org), a biennial meeting that was held in Miami, Florida in March of 2016. These papers form the basis of a special virtual issue, Work from the Organic Reactions Catalysis Society Meeting 2016, that is now available at http://pubs.acs.org/ page/oprdfk/vi/catalysisorganicreactions. The use of reaction catalysts is vital for enabling a wide range of industrial organic processes. Recognizing this, ORCS has been meeting since 1966 to bring together researchers from industry, academia, and national laboratories to discuss the latest advances in the catalysis of organic transformations. ORCS has long been unique for its nearly equal number of attendees from academia and from industry, demonstrating that organic reactions provide fertile ground for both fundamental insights and major commercial importance. The submission of manuscripts was optional for the conference presenters, but the 15 papers published in OPR&D are important examples of work being carried out in this field. Of special note are the papers from ORCS award recipients. At each ORCS meeting, three researchers receive awards for outstanding achievements in organic reactions catalysis research. At the 26th meeting, Dr. Joseph Zoeller (Eastman Chemical Company, retired) and Dr. Anil Guram (Art of the Elements, LLC) received the annual Paul N. Rylander Award sponsored by BASF. Their papers included in the special issue describe the catalysis of carbonylation reactions and catalysts for practical cross-coupling reactions, respectively. The paper of Prof. Jens Nørskov of Stanford University, recipient of the Murray Raney award sponsored by W. R. Grace & Co., focuses on electrocatalysts used for CO2 reduction to organic compounds. Other papers in the special issue describe topics ranging from biomass conversion to pharmaceutical production, as shown in Table 1. On behalf of the ORCS executive board, I would like to acknowledge OPR&D for conducting a rigorous peer review of the submitted manuscripts and for the compilation of the papers into a virtual special issue. The papers themselves report on key advances that will affect specific areas of research, while the special issue provides a modern form for continuing the tradition of publishing the proceedings of ORCS. Moreover, the association of ORCS with OPR&D is a natural one, given the overlapping missions and audiences of the journal and society. We look forward to the next ORCS meeting in San Diego, California in April 2018!
