Virtual Special Issue: Advanced Materials for Engineering Applications Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research is pleased to publish this virtual special issue (VSI), which contains 20 recent articles touching on different aspects of advanced materials for engineering applications. The VSI contains contributed articles, along with invited research articles from authors who made outstanding presentations at the 253rd ACS National Meeting in San Francisco. The theme of the 253rd ACS National Meeting was “Advanced Materials, Technologies, Systems, and Processes.” This compilation is our fourth virtual special issue containing invited papers from an ACS National Meeting {http://pubs.acs. org/page/iecred/vi/advanced-materials-sanfrancisco-2018}. Several of the articles1−6 deal with bio-based materials (e.g., polymers, adsorbents, fibers). Applications in view within this collection include catalysis,7−11 separations,2,3,12−15 electrochemistry,16,17 drug delivery,18 cement chemistry,19 and microwave absorption.20 More specifically, the articles describe new materials or engineered systems that can be used for CO2 capture,12,14 delivery of anticancer drugs,18 uranium removal from water,3 recovery of food-grade biomacromolecules from macroalgae,2 “smart” chromatographic separation of complex mixtures,15 and conversion of biogas to renewable liquid hydrocarbon fuel.10 The contributions in this virtual special issue come from authors in the United States, Canada, Brazil, Iran, China, Japan, Korea, India, Belgium, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, with affiliations ranging from universities, companies, and government research laboratories. We trust that this VSI on Advanced Materials for Engineering Applications, with invited papers from the 253rd ACS National Meeting, will be valued by both our authors and readers.
