VITON SCORES 50-T0-1 IMPROVEMENT IN DIAPHRAGM LIFE After frequent failures with ordinary rubber diaphragms, a chemical company increased service life 50 times with diaphragms of VITON® fluoroelastomer. Some time back, a chemical company had a costly maintenance problem: diaphragm failure in pulsation dampeners on a 600-psi line handling 93-98% sulfuric acid. Diaphragms made with various synthetic rubbers were tested. All failed —some in less than a week! Then diaphragms made of VITON, the heat-and-chemical-defying fluoroelastomer created by Du Pont were tried. In a year's time, VITON demonstrated a 50-to-l service life improvement over the best elastomers used previously. Although the diaphragms of VITON® cost $100 in contrast to $20 for ordinary rubber, savings of $900 per year per diaphragm were realized in replacement costs. Additional benefits included increased safety and reduced production costs. Amazing? No. Ordinary—for VITON. It can take years of mechanical punishment and chemical torture, in temperatures ranging from sub-zero to 500° F. Discover how VITON can help make your maintenance dollars go further. Pulsation dampeners made by Gadco Products, Inc., Long Beach, California, handle 93-98% sulfuric acid at 600 psi. Installation of diaphragms made of VITON saved $900 per year for each unit in operation at this plant.
