Terry L. Helser Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, SUNY College at Oneonta, Oneonta, NY 13820-4015; [email protected]

The wordsearch puzzle below contains 36 names and terms that describe the physical properties of water in a 14 ⫻ 13 letter matrix. Discover them by filling the blanks in the description below the matrix. Then, find and highlight these terms in the letter matrix. (Hint: there are several words within words.) “WATER” is already done for you. When all are found, use the 16 letters remaining in the matrix to complete the sentence describing this liquid. Your success will be rewarded. Good hunting!

water bugs use to float, and the A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ that allows it to climb I _ _ _ _ or P _ _ _ _ surfaces. H _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ compounds dissolve by forming a S _ _ _ _ _ of H _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. Fortunately, it is not a universal S _ _ _ _ _ _, since H _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ compounds like N _ _ _ _ _ _ _ fats are insoluble. Relative to other Group 6A hydrides (H2S, H2Se, and H2Te), water’s B _ _ _ _ _ _ P _ _ _ _ and M _ _ _ _ _ _ P _ _ _ _, and the related molar or S _ _ _ _ _ _ _ H _ _ _s of V _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ and F _ _ _ _ _, are much too high. This allows S _ _ _ _, that is water V _ _ _ _, clouds, F _ _ and S _ _ _ to exist on Earth. And do you know any other substance whose D _ _ _ _ _ _ decreases as it freezes so that _ _ _ floats? Water causes the H _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ of complex molecules and polymers. And, finally, it can I _ _ _ _ _ to produce a hydroxide and a H _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
