...and how they affect filter fabric performance Weave, in its basic varieties, plain, twill and satin, is a fundamental element of fabric construction. The type of weave depends on the manner of interlacing the lengthwise "warp" yarns with the crosswise "filling" yarns during manufacture. Plain weave has a simple "one up and one down" construction. In a tight weave it can provide the most yarn interlacings per square inch, with high cover and impermeability. Or it can be made as open and porous as required for specific applications. Twill weave, with its sharp diagonal "twill line" formed by passage of a warp yarn over two or more filling yarns, is usually more porous than plain weaves. Both cotton and synthetic filter twills are widely used in filtration operations. The satin weave, with fewer interlacings spaced widely but regularly, provides smooth surface, high

porosity and cover factor. It is particularly valuable in gaseous filtration, such as dust collection. Cotton fabrics in this weave are commonly known as sateens. Many variations of the three basic weaves are available. Chain cloth, for example, is a derivation of twill weave especially developed for filtration. Athough weave has an important bearing on filter cloths, fabric performance is finally determined by the combination of fiber, yarn, weave, count and finish. It takes a specialist to select the most effective and economical filter fabrics for specific applications. You'll find the textile experts who distribute Wellington Sears fabrics have extensive experience, plus an outstanding selection of thoroughly proved filter fabrics.
