Welcome JCE Subscriber! You’ve Got Online+! Beginning September 1999, all JCE subscribers, print subscribers and JCE Online+ subscribers, have access to all areas of JCE Online. Previously some JCE Online resources were restricted to JCE Online+ subscribers. But no longer! Now all JCE subscribers have access to all JCE Online has to offer. JCE is a multimedia publisher that strives to bring you the information and materials you need to teach or learn about chemistry. As chemistry education continues to focus on the use of dynamic, visual, and interactive teaching materials, JCE aims to provide you with these materials in the most appropriate medium: print, computer software (CD-ROM), video, or online. However, to get these materials, we previously required that you subscribe separately to each medium. Although our computer software, video, and CD-ROM materials must still be purchased separately (we think that you prefer it that way; if not, let us know) we have now consolidated our print and online materials under a single subscription. This unification will give you the best of what both print and online have to offer. Our print Journal presents its information in a very high resolution medium with a familiar interface that is portable and requires no additional appliances (well, maybe eyeglasses for some of us) to use. JCE Online suffers from an inferior resolution and requires a computer connected to the Internet to access its content. But the content JCE Online offers can be interactive, dynamic, colorful, immediate, and searchable. The synergy of these two media under a single subscription will more effectively provide you with the ideas and information you need. Follow the J-flask The J-flask icon denotes those resources at JCE Online that are available exclusively to JCE subscribers. The J-flask icon appears next to those links to restricted resources that require you to authenticate yourself as a JCE subscriber.

Your Subscriber Account Information Is Your Key

W

password are derived from your subscriber account information. This information is printed on the mailing label that is on the sheet (we call this sheet a carrier sheet) in the bag in which you receive your Journal. The name you provide appears as the first line in the mailing address of the label. The password you provide is the five-digit number on the second line of the label.

Journal Materials at JCE Online Content from the Journal that you can find at JCE Online includes abstracts of all articles as HTML files. In some cases (denoted with a W in the Journal Table of Contents) the full text of the article is available as HTML. You can also find supplementary materials provided by the authors of some articles, notably laboratory experiments; and the full text of all editorial content as PDF files. The supplementary materials and the PDF files (I like to call them “digital reprints”) are available only to JCE Subscribers. Supplements, Digital Reprints... How Do I Find Them? Typically, WWW sites provide many avenues to access their content and JCE Online is no exception. The main avenue to Journal content is via the Journal items in the navigation bar on the left-hand side of all pages. On the JCE Online home page these items include links to the current issue Table of Contents and past issues from July 1995 to present. The Table of Contents links to each article’s HTML page. Supplements for articles and digital reprints (full articles as PDF files) are found through that article’s HTML page, which contains either the full text of the article or the abstract of the article. This HTML page can also be found by searching JCE Index. Near the top of the page above the article’s title is a menu bar (reflected near the bottom of the page for convenience), which contains two or three buttons. These buttons are linked to the article’s abstract or full text in HTML, the supplementary material for the article, and the full text as a PDF file. Only the Abstract and Full Text buttons appear when no supplementary materials are available.

When you first attempt to access a restricted resource you will be asked to provide a name and password. This name and These buttons appear near the top and bottom of the Journal pages at JCE Online and are linked to the abstract, supplementary materials and full text of the article.

Explore and Let Us Know What You Find The above description should get you started in your exploration of JCE Online. As a JCE subscriber you can now explore every nook and cranny; nothing is off limits. JCE Internet articles and features such as Mathcad in the Chemistry Curriculum and Conceptual Questions and Challenge Problems are now available to you. Most future enhancements to JCE Online will also be restricted, but not from you! As you explore JCE Online, let us hear about what you like and dislike. Our email address is at the bottom of every page. To authenticate yourself as a JCE subscriber requires you to provide a name and password from your mailing label.
