Judicial thinking is forbidden, an informal and permissive atmosphere is encouraged, and large numbers of ideas are solicited with the understanding that "wild" ideas are completely acceptable. T h e brainstorm session is capable of producing astonishing numbers of ideas. For instance a group in Schenectady recently brainstormed a problem of continued interest to the electrical industry—a quick method for joining two electrical conductors In less than 30 minutes the group produced 175 ideas. T h e brainstorm session should be kept in perspective however. It is generally not a method for solving problems but a technique for stimulating ideas that will lead to problem solutions. Ideas may be stimulated by association and combination with other ideas. These processes will be affected by the fund of knowledge the engineer has acquired—the scope of ideas he has to associate with and combine. This reservoir of ideas is augmented through observation of the engineer's surroundings. There is a great deal to be learned through the study of the literature, the study of competitors' products and activities, and even the study of nature itself. The engineer should maintain a constantly questioning attitude. A written check list of questions or idea "needlers" may be helpful. Reduction to Practice

There is a great deal of work to be accomplished between the time an idea is committed to paper in the form of a design and the time that it goes out the back door as a finished product. This work involves not only the engineering function but the whole business organization. If he is to accomplish his purpose and contribute to the over-all benefit of the business organization the engineer should understand his place and function in that organization. He should be familiar with the problems involved in producing a piece of hardware from an engineering drawing—the relationships of engineering and manufacturing. He should understand the legal and particularly the patent implications of his work. He should also understand how his
