What is the common denominator for sand-woodbricks-carboncements?

A FURFURYL ALCOHOL (FA) RESIN

FA Resins have a unique combination of properties and characteristics. Chemical resistance, high strength, craze resistance, improved heat resistivity, and gap filling are some of the major features of resins made from QO® furfuryl alcohol. FA Resins are thermosetting in contact with acidic materials. At elevated temperatures the curing time is measured in seconds. Even at room temperatures these resins can be cured quite easily. These desirable properties of FA resins have resulted in numerous successful industrial applications: FOUNDRY BINDERS. Only sand, catalyst and binder are required. Increased core production results with better control of casting dimensions, and lower cost. WOOD ADHESIVES. Glues made with FA—urea-formaldehyde cure to produce a tough bond with improved craze resistance and stability to heat and aging. BRIOKS. Low viscosity FA solutions make chemical resistant brick non-porous. CARBON. Excellent penetrating action and low viscosity of FA solutions make possible the impregnation of porous carbon or graphite. Upon heating, FA solutions readily convert to an infusible and chemically inert resin. CEMENTS. Fully cured FA resins are inert to acids, alkalies and solvents and are generally recognized as the lowest cost corrosion resistant thermosetting mortars available. These resins are used between tile and brick in the construction of floors, digester linings and pickling tanks.

The Quaker Oats Company does not manufacture these furfuryl alcohol resins but will be glad to refer you to those who do. For general information on the chemistry and properties of furfuryl alcohol, write for Bulletin 205-A.
